Mt Washington in the spring: EARN YOUR TURNS!

Snowboarding on the east coast this year was not great; though I was only home for 2 separate months out of the season I heard/saw evidence of the worst snow year I can remember. The east coast is where some of our favorite riders like Scotty Lago and Pat Moore had to earn their turns for many years before they expanded territories to the west and beyond. It is the determination and faith it takes to get by on the east coast that has made them into the professionals we know and look up to today.

I began hiking at Pinkham Notch the trail head for several of Mt Washington's best hikes. the goal of the day was to meet my friends Brian Nevins and Bryan Johnson up at Tuckerman's Ravine for some short, but very intense, runs down the remaining snow. On this day I really had to work hard, a short but grueling 3-4 mile solo hike later I find myself at the base of a chunk of snow that's about 1000 feet wide and 200 feet of vertical. its a pretty sweet little gem in the now green surroundings of the white mountains. I hiked the patch of snow several times and even built myself a little jump over a rock.

After being to Superpark 16 at Mt Bachelor the week before one might expect me to be a little unexcited by what I was spending so much effort and time on this day. But I am from the east coast, I know its hard to find snow in late May up here, and I genuinely had a great time even though the fog had socked us in from all directions.

Brian and Bryan had already been up there for an hour or so before me so after we snapped a few more unique photos and had some lunch we began our long hike down. The ratio of time spent hiking versus actually snowboarding was something like 200:1 but I can tell you every second was worth it. We work hard for what little we have up here in New England but we are proud of our Terrain and challenge any of you west coasters to even make it up the hill with such little snow to motivate!
